When does it start?
How much does it cost?
1 Month – $3.99
3 Months – $7.99 ($2.66 per month)
12 Months – $19.99 ($1.67 per month)
Family Plan – $34.99 for up to 8 users (each user would only pay 36 cents per month!)
Why should I pay for something that I’m getting now for free?!?
While it sucks that we’ll have to pay to play online, at $19.99 per year Switch Online is significantly cheaper than Xbox Live ($59.99 per year) and PS Plus ($49.99 per year). Taking advantage of the family plan makes it ridiculously cheap ($4.37 per year). Nintendo essentially gave players a 1.5 year free trial of a service that costs them money and requires them to pay staff for maintenance and updates. Since there is no virtual console on Switch, the ability to play 20 retro games with the service is a nice benefit (those games would combine for $100 if you bought them on Wii U Virtual Console). Also, I strongly believe that Smash Bros for Switch will be released in September with extensive online play options in order to entice players to subscribe. Nintendo has also stated that they will offer special deals and offers to Nintendo Online subscribers, but no specifics have been given yet.
We’ll have to pay to play Switch games online starting in September, but if you can hook up with 7 other people and get a family plan, it costs next to nothing.
20 NES games and Cloud saves sweeten the deal
